Toronto, Ontario, July 25, 2011 – ENBALA Power Networks™, a Toronto-based company that connects demand-side assets to the electric power grid, has successfully completed an alternative technologies trial with Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) and is market ready.

The trial illustrated how ENBALA’s innovative made-in-Ontario solution successfully provides Regulation Service to electricity system operators by creating a network of large demand-side assets.

“We were happy to take part in the trial, and we look forward to building on our strong relationship with IESO,” said Ron Dizy, president and CEO, ENBALA Power Networks. “Providing Grid Balance by harnessing the flexibility of demand-side assets helps the IESO to maintain the reliability of the electric power system and it creates a new revenue source for the organizations that own the assets.”

Through the trial, IESO sought innovative technologies that would enable industrial, commercial and institutional electricity consumers to provide Regulation Service, which is traditionally supplied by generators.

Regulation Service acts to match electricity supply to demand on a second-by-second basis across the province. By providing Regulation Service through demand-side assets, ENBALA can help electricity system operators make the grid more robust and encourages end-user participation while allowing generators to run more efficiently.

“ENBALA’s participation in the Alternative Technologies regulation pilot project successfully helped the IESO assess whether non-generation technologies can provide Regulation Service to the grid,” said Bruce Campbell, VP, Resource Integration, IESO. “The IESO is looking into ways to integrate non-generation alternative technologies as potential suppliers of Regulation Service to the IESO-controlled grid.”
