Latest Release Encompasses Multiple Grid Services, Delivering Simultaneous Value Streams Across EE/DSM, Power Ops, Planning, Wholesale Energy Markets

Enbala announces a new version of its Concerto software platform for distributed energy optimization and control. Concerto underpins the firm’s award-winning energy flexibility, Virtual Power Plant (VPP) and Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) solution set.

Enhancements included in the new Concerto release make it the industry’s first converged platform for demand flexibility, VPP market operations and grid/feeder optimization use cases — enabling deployment of multiple grid services for stakeholders across both utility and energy retail enterprises. For utilities, Concerto now delivers multiple, simultaneous value streams across energy efficiency/demand-side management (EE/DSM), power operations and planning.  For energy retailers, the new version integrates with trading platforms and transmission system operators to provide seamless market operations, bid reservations, optimization and dispatch of distributed energy resources (DERs).

Some of the new platform features include:

  • Five new grid services to support market operations across Europe, Asia Pacific and North America
  • Expansion of the open Concerto API and formal SDK developer program, providing utilities, system integrators and DER manufacturers with faster, simpler integration to the Concerto platform and quicker time to market for smart energy devices and applications
  • An expanded library of DER digital twin asset models, providing greater energy flexibility from more front-of-meter and behind-the-meter DER asset types such as analog loads, EV charging stations, thermostat group models and manual loads for legacy load control programs
  • New or enhanced adapters for IEC-60870-5-104 and OpenADR 2.0 standards-based communications. This offers utilities and other integration partners faster time to market and consistent communication frameworks for repeatable integrations with the Concerto platform — for both integration to other enterprise systems as well as to DER assets for telemetry and real-time control.
  • A notification system and participant portal for DER asset owners, providing early awareness and improved access to information about pending, current and past energy curtailment events and program participation

New grid services available include:

  • Primary reserve supporting frequency response ancillary services for local detection and response to grid frequency deviations
  • Secondary reserve supporting frequency regulation market operations, with fast optimization and closed-loop control to a one- to three-second AGC signal
  • Power factor control supporting local feeder optimization via reactive power import/export by DERs
  • Energy control support for pre-positioning fleet energy capacity for market operations
  • Threshold control for support of peak management use cases for grid feeder optimization and end-customer site demand charge management

New core platform functionality includes:

  • Support for asset energy cost schedules to support market operations and real-time economic optimization where market price may vary
  • Support for site export limits allowing for increased accuracy in DER and fleet-wide control
  • Concerto API enhancements and extensions to support SDK 1.0 for third-party integrations, accelerated partnership and ecosystem of Concerto-integrated DERs
  • Support for custom branding of UI for white-label partner engagements
  • Additional customer baseline load (CBL) methodologies to support new North American demand response programs

New/enhanced asset digital twins/models include:

  • Analog load asset model to support variable load DERs, e.g., variable frequency drives (VFD) in commercial/industrial asset fleets
  • EV charging station asset model to support EVSE integrations and EV fleets in utility programs
  • Thermostat asset models to support utility-scale residential and small and medium business (SMB) thermostat DSM programs
  • Manual load asset model to support legacy DR loads requiring manual (email, SMS, IVR) notification for curtailment

New DER/market integrations include:

  • ecobee thermostat integration
  • AddÉnergie and FLO EVSE integration
  • OpenADR VEN adapter for ADMS integration
  • OpenADR VTN adapter and certification for integration to DERs and legacy curtailment service providers (aggregators) participating in North American DR programs
  • Pelican thermostat, relay and site meter integrations to support C&I and SMB utility programs
  • IEC 60870-4-104 adapter for integration of a variety of DER asset types in international markets
  • IEC 60870-4-104 adapter for TSO/utility enterprise integration and support of market operations
  • Enhancements to existing integrations to support new VPP goal types: Aquanta, Tesla, SolarEdge
